Usha Lathuraz (BE) - DEL-EM
Usha Lathuraz explores the veils drawn between her personal mythology and the societal narratives that shape her evolution, through imagery that borders on the intimate and the hesitant nature of memory.
"Del-Em is the name of a DIY device for extracting menstruation and abortion. Loraine Rothman and Carol Drowner, feminist activists and supporters of the Women's Liberation Movement, developed the device in the 1960s when abortion was still illegal in the United States. Strong questions, especially in light of the repeal of Roe V. Wade last June, led me to become interested in the concept of reproductive justice as well as self-help practices - specifically those that are part of abortion rights struggles - and I have since been trying to imagine ways to address their perspectives within my practice."
